Lighting is (Almost) Everything!

Lighting is (almost) everything. I just answered a question on a Face Book Group about photographing birds against the sky, and avoiding getting just a silhouette. One answer to this question would be to adjust your exposure, either manually, or with Exposure Compensation. That's a good start, I did have my camera's Exposure compensation set to +1/3, but as you can see from the top photo (both are presented here without any manipulation other than being resized for this post), it helps a little but not enough. The bottom picture is from the same sequence, I was shooting a burst, waiting for the Cormorant to turn a little and catch the sun. The bird turning it's body, and traveling a little more to my right, caught the sun perfectly. From silhouette, to full detail in the blink of an eye.
